While director Anu Menon was being cagey about the news even till yesterday, it is now being reported that Amazon Prime Video has secured the deal for what has been touted as one of the most anticipated releases in India – Shakuntala Devi: Human Computer which stars Vidya Balan in the lead role.
On Thursday, it was announced that the Shoojit Sircar directed Gulabo Sitabo starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana in the lead roles would bypass a theatrical release and go direct to Amazon Prime Video.
The OTT platform has also snagged six new titles – Tamil-language courtroom drama Ponmagal Vandhal, starring Jyotika which will debut May 29, followed by Gulabo Sitabo on June 12. Then, there is Telugu and Tamil-language thriller Penguin which will premiere June 19. Kannada-language crime thriller Law will release on Prime Video on June 26.
On July 24, the OTT platform will be the site of Kannada-language comedy French Biryani, starring popular comedian Danish Sait. “Prime Video with its deep penetration in India, with viewership across over 4,000 towns and cities, and its world-wide reach in more than 200 countries and territories, will give a large global release footprint to these films,” said Gaurav Gandhi, director and country GM, Amazon Prime Video India, according to Variety.
Malayalam-language film Soofiyum Sujathayum which stars Aditi Rao Hydari and is also set to release on the platform, apparently.
