The much-awaited Alia Bhatt starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi is now set to hit the theatres in January of 2022.
The makers of the movie came with this big announcement this Thursday, announcing that the movie will be rolled out on January 6, 2022.
The film was originally expected on July 30 but precautionary measures that had to be put in place due to a flare-up in the Covid-19 infections had caused theatres to close their gates to audiences. The team seems to be set on a theatrical release.
The chairman and MD of Pen Studios, Dr Jayantilal Gada, issued an official statement to make that apparent: “We would like to clarify that Gangubai Kathiawadi, RRR and Attack will release in cinemas. There have been several rumours doing rounds about these films releasing on OTT platforms before cinemas which are untrue. These magnum opus films are made for the big screen experience and would be releasing in theatres.”
Producer Jayantilal Gada had apparently approached Bhansali about a possible release date as soon as the Maharashtra government announced the re-opening of movie theatres in the State will now be allowed. However, Bhansali was of the mind to wait for a suitable date next year.
“Too many release dates were announced for this year within 24 hours of the announcement. Sanjay Bhansali feels it is premature to schedule Gangubai Kathiawadi in 2021. He wanted to push it for when until the pandemic situation is clearer,” apparently has said a source close to Bhansali.
“Also, Sanjay feels that until theatres are allowed to run to 100 per cent capacity (contrary to the 50 per cent occupancy allowed at the moment) audiences won’t feel confident enough to return to movie theatres. By January, theatres should be running to full capacity,” added the alleged source.
Gangubai Kathiawadi is an on-screen reiteration of the life of Gangubai from Kathiawadi who made herself somewhat of a figure to reckon with in the Kamathipura of the 1960s. The movie is also touted to be based on the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai, written by S.Hussain Zaidi.
