Akshay Kumar starrer Raksha Bandhan hit the theatres today. The movie has drawn mixed reviews so far.
Kumar essays the role of Lala Kedarnath, a gol gappa shop owner, who’s entrusted with the responsibility of marrying off his four sisters. The anxiety that comes with it, is amped up by the struggles of getting his own love life in place. Bhumi Pednekar plays Sapna, Kumar’s childhood sweetheart. The heartwarming storyline evolves into a social commentary as the movie progresses.
The Central Board of Film Certification has given it a U certificate, which makes it a family-friendly film. Director Aanand L. Rai hailed the certification ‘a moral victory’ before the movie’s release.
Here’s what the popular opinion about the movie looks like:
Lauding Kumar’s acting skills:
Many want to celebrate the sibling bond with this movie:
When the trailer was released, comparisons were drawn to the Telugu movie Kathi Kantha Rao, which was released a decade ago. Similar to Kathi Kantha Rao, the brother (Kumar in this case) in Raksha Bandhan has the responsibility of getting his four sisters married.
Before the release of the film, there were boycotts happening as well but Kumar and the team of the movie didn’t pay heed to it. He was promoting the film in Kolkata and in an interview, he said, “As I just said this, it is a free country, everyone can do what they want. But this all (Raksha Bandhan and Laal Singh Chaddha) helps the economy of India. We are all on the verge of becoming the biggest and the greatest country. I would request them (trolls) and you (media), don’t get into it.”
The actor also feels that this is one of the best works of his career. In an interview, Kumar said that he cried when he saw the movie himself. It made him realize that people these days don’t invest much time in relationships.
