With the cinema halls re-opening and new OTT streaming platforms coming into our lives, the Hindi film industry seems to be getting back on track. To make up for all the time lost, it is set to treat its audience with newer and better content. Bollywood has been delivering a lot of biographical content lately, and it is exciting to see real-life stories making it to the silver screen. Watching the lesser-known, the lesser-seen facts of an inspiring person come alive on screen is a cinephile’s dream come true. We recently saw Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, where young Ganga is tricked by her boyfriend with the promise of a film career. Her whole life is turned upside down when he sells her to a brothel in Kamathipura for Rs 500. Later, she becomes a powerful brothel madame — Gangubai Kathiawadi.
Let’s take a look at some of the other biopic films and series that we’ll get to watch in 2022:
Maidaan
Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan revisits history and talks about the golden era in Indian football. The film captures various aspects that made the decade – from 1952 until 1962 – the most remarkable one in Indian football history. Devgn will be playing the role of coach Syed Abdul Rahim under whose leadership the Indian football team won the Asian Games in 1951 and 1962. Directed by Amit Sharma, the film also stars Keerthy Suresh.
Pippa
Ishaan Khatter will be seen playing the role of war hero Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta. The movie has been adapted from the book The Burning Chaffees by Brigadier Mehta. It’s about a soldier who fought in the war against Pakistan in 1971. Directed by Raja Krishna Menon (Airlift), the movie also features Mrunal Thakur and Priyanshu Painyuli.
Shabaash Mithu
Directed by Srijit Mukherji, this biographical sports drama is based on the life of Indian women’s cricket team captain Mithali Raj. The movie features Taapsee Pannu, Richard Bhakti Klein, Hani Yadav, and Asad Ali Palijo.
Prithviraj
Prithviraj will have Akshay Kumar and Manushi Chillar in the lead. Directed by Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi, the movie marks the Bollywood debut of the Manushi who is the 2017 Miss World Winner and also stars Sanjay Dutt and Sonu Sood in pivotal roles. The historic action drama is a biopic of legendary warrior king Prithviraj Chauhan. The story revolves around the First Battle Of Tarain led by Chauhan.
Sam Bahadur
Sam Bahadur is based on war hero Sam Manekshaw’s life and it features Vicky Kaushal in the lead role. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the movie sheds light on the few important chapters from history such as the taking over of Kashmir by the Indian army, the 1971 Indo-Pak war, and the Partition. The movie also features Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra.
Chakda ‘Xpress
A biopic on cricketer Jhulan Goswami, the movie Chakda ‘Express will see Anushka Sharma playing the lead role. The movie, which will be helmed by Prosit Ray.
