Last year, the Oscars were massively criticised for overlooking actors of colour and women in direction. The Academy Awards made sure they don’t repeat the mistake. Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell were nominated in the Best Director category for Nomadland and Promising Young Woman, respectively. Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) and Andra Day (The United States Vs Billie Holiday), Daniel Kaluuya (Judas And The Black Messiah), Leslie Odom Jr (One Night In Miami), and Lakeith Stanfield (Judas And The Black Messiah) also received nominations this year.
