Action-packed war sequences, adrenaline-rushing dialogues and heart-touching stories of soldiers guarding the country, Bollywood war movies seldom fail to give us the chills. And on the occasion of India’s Army Day on January 15, here are five of them to pay tribute to our troops.
Rangoon
Bollywood’s latest experiment with World War II, Rangoon will have Shahid Kapoor playing an Indian Army officer. This main theme of this Vishal Bhardwaj tale is a love triangle that will also feature Kangana Ranaut and Saif Ali Khan. It is set to hit the screens on February 24.
Lakshya
Many 90s kids can relate to this coming-of-age drama that depicts Hrithik Roshan as a directionless college graduate who ends up in the army. Set against a fictionalised backdrop of the 1999 Kargil War, the movie also features Preity Zinta and Amitabh Bachchan in prominent roles.
Madras Café
This critically acclaimed Shoojit Sircar spy thriller revolves around an Indian Army officer (John Abraham), who is appointed to head covert operations during the Sri Lankan Civil War in the 80s and 90s. It is a chilling account of one of the most important events in modern Indian political history.
Border
Any war movie list is incomplete without this fan-favourite from the 90s. JP Dutta’s star cast of Sunny Deol , Sunil Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Jackie Shroff etc and Anu Malik and Late Aadesh Shrivastava’s music made for an epic adaptation of the 1971 Indo-Pak War.
Yahaan
Yashpal Sharma’s poignant Dil Se-esque love story of an Indian Army officer and the sister of a jihadi insurgent is set in the backdrop of the country’s war against terrorism in Kashmir. In the movie, Jimmy Shergill is as poised as ever and then-debutant Minisha Lamba has also played one of the few significant roles of her career.
