Located on the Scottish Hebridean isle of Islay, the Bruichladdich Distillery may have been founded in 1881, but it is known to be progressive, innovative and to constantly challenge convention.

The distillery was built in 1881 by the Harvey Brothers — a dynamic whisky family that had owned distilleries for over a century. These included Glasgow’s Yoker and Dundas Hill Distilleries. Bruichladdich came together as the third Harvey distillery, making use of each of the three brothers’ expertise — Robert (23) designed it, John (31) contributed with his distilling experience and William (32) put in the money.

From the onset, the distillery stood out because the brothers rejected the belief that industrial processes that yielded the maximum product with minimum input and variation would ensure the lowest unit price. In a market stifled by industrialsation and self-interest of huge organizations, Bruichladdich has stayed true to its beliefs.

This is a distillery that respects the past, but doesn’t live in its shadow. It pays tribute to Islay’s heritage by lending its spirits an authenticity associated with local ingredients and methods of distilling and maturation. Raw ingredients are paramount in importance here. Only 100 per cent Scottish barley is used — after all, it’s called ‘Scotch’ for a reason, right? They are the major distiller of organic barley in Scotland and have been instrumental in support for organic farming in the single malt category. In 2010, Bruichladdich released the first single malt whisky to be made purely from Islay Barley, probably the first in the island’s history.

Among the finest products of the distillery are The Classic Laddie — an Islay single malt whisky — and The Botanist, a gin that features 22 local ingredients, truly making it one of a kind.

This single malt Scotch whisky has been crafted by master distiller Adam Hannett from individually selected casks, to showcase the classic, floral and elegant Bruichladdich house style. Unpeated, it is made from 100 per cent Scottish barley, trickle distilled, then matured for its entire life by the shores of Loch Indaal in premium American oak. It is a testament to the quality of the distillery’s ingredients.
