Your twenties are the good time to start with a proper skincare routine; all the hormonal issues that usually peak in teens settle down by the beginning of twenties giving a clear idea about the skin type and skin concerns. Thus, this is also the right time to start with a skincare routine that will help you maintain healthy skin during this time and will also build a strong foundation for the upcoming decades. By that we mean, preventing the visible signs of ageing, sagging skin, pigmentation, dark spots and uneven skin tone that will start showing up in your thirties. Here’s what to do
Double Cleansing
One of the major issues you might have to deal with in the thirties and forties is enlarged or clogged pores. To make sure you avoid that situation later, it’s important to keep the pores clean. While steaming your face and going for a facial seems like a big ask, you can just double cleanse at home to begin with. Make sure you use an oil cleanser to clean the face of any dirt and pollution and follow it up with a gentle face wash.
Start Using an Eye Cream
While the experts are always divided on whether or not eye cream works to reduce dark circles, wrinkles and puffiness, at least these provide hydration to the sensitive under-eye area. Twenties are also a wild phase where raging at a party and going to work hungover seems like an adventure. Wait till your thirties when it seems like a daunting task and the skin starts to show signs that it’s exhausted and tired. Make sure you include an under-eye cream in your routine, at least in your PM care.
Start Face Masking
This is also the time to give extra TLC to your skin because you have time and energy to do so. Make sure you choose a hydrating mask, according to your skin type, something that also targets the concerns like spots and pigmentation. Even if you can do this weekly or once in 10 days, it's enough for beginners.
Good Time to Start Actives
We don't recommend using retinol or such strong active at this age, especially without consulting with a dermat, but using hyaluronic acid or niacinamide can help better the skin and strengthen the skin barrier. These actives keep the skin hydrated, and also work on the uneven skin tone. These actives can be used as serums before moisturiser for maximum benefit.
Don't Skip Exfoliation
First thing first, don't overdo it but don't skip it either. Once in 15 days is good enough to remove the dead skin cells and reveal brighter skin. Physical or chemical, no matter which exfoliator you choose, it shouldn't be too harsh on the skin. Also, if you have sensitive skin type, make sure you consult with a dermat before including any product in your routine. However, this step will help your skin if you are into sports and like sweating it out outdoors to stay fit.
Don't Skip Sunscreen
Let's be honest, we are all carefree once we hit our twenties. We don't really care about repercussions and it doesn't even show much at this age. But choices at this age impacts skin health later. So, while skipping sunscreen right now may seem harmless, it can have consequences later like pigmentation, uneven skin tone, dark spots etc. Make sure you religiously follow this step.
