How To Get Summer Skincare Right
How To Get Summer Skincare Right

It really pays when you put effort in the right places

Even if you aren’t too invested in skincare, it’s likely that you’ve wondered if the buzz around hyaluronic acid was valid. The gooey translucent substance took the internet by storm in the year 2020 when skin experts began to harp on its magical benefits.

However, the HA isn’t your average skin booster. It requires to be used with discretion. “Not all HA s are made equal. A lot depends on the size and the grade of this ingredient, so choose a product from a brand that you trust,” cautions Dr. Renita Rajan, a skin and laser specialist at RENDER. “You can include it in a bedtime serum – like the Peptide Therapy Intense Repair Crème for overnight repair and hydration.”

What makes it appropriate for Indian men?

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that can hold a thousand times its weight in water. It is naturally present in the dermis of our skin. Dr Andrea Rachel Castelino, Consultant Dermatologist at DermaZeal Clinic, adds, “Hyaluronic acid can be used as a cream or a serum and applied as a moisturizer in order to provide a supple appearance to the skin. It works by absorbing water from the environment and holding onto the moisture and so it is best used in humid conditions.”

Since most men are happiest with keeping things basic, the ideal way to test out the marvels of hyaluronic acid—and be consistent at using it— on your skin is by using an everyday essential that contains a healthy amount of HA. “The easiest way to use it is by incorporating a hyaluronic acid serum into your routine or using a moisturiser with an in-built Ha. Apply it to damp skin after cleansing,” says Dr. Chytra Anand - Celebrity Cosmetic Dermatologist & Founder of Kosmoderma Clinics. The usage of hyaluronic acid is recommended even for those with non-problematic skin, because it hydrates the skin without adding oiliness. She further asserts that since the main purpose of HA is to retain moisture in your skin; regular application reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and is ideal for all skin types.

Smart ways to get consistent with your skincare

While everyone knows the importance of being consistent, not many are able to adhere to it. So, it’s only fair if you incorporate smart hacks—"Use your phone or a sticky note to remind you to do your skincare routine twice a day,” opines Chytra.

Lastly, sunscreen is king

The top sunscreens out there currently are the ones that are broad spectrum, which means they act against UVA and UVB rays of the sun. There are sunscreens that act on the infrared radiation (IR) and visible light (VR) as well. The SPF of a sunscreen refers to its protection against UVB rays, while ratings such as the boots star rating refers to the UVA rays.

“An ideal sunscreen can also be picked based on its substantivity, which is the ability of the sunscreen to withstand water and sweat. With all these parameters, it is ideal for you to have your sunscreen prescribed by a dermatologist,” says Dr. Andrea, who asserts that Lip care is equally important as the lips due to their low melanin content and thinness are easily prone to sunburns and sun damage by UV rays. Using a lip balm with an SPF can protect the lips from the harmful rays of the sun.”

There is no easy way with skincare. However, it is easier to stick to a skincare routine once you see the positive outcomes of it. For this, it is always recommended to start with a routine that is prescribed by your dermatologist after a skin analysis. Initially, it does help to set reminders to maintain consistency. It is also important to motivate yourself patiently as the benefits of a good skincare routine take time to show. Once you start seeing the positive impact it has on your skin, following through with your routine becomes quite effortless.

1) Adequate sun protection is recommended which involves wearing a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protective eyewear, opting for full-sleeved clothing in darker colors, and applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen in adequate amounts. It is essential to reapply your sunscreen every two hours to ensure continuous protection against harmful UV rays. Additionally, seeking shade during peak sun hours of 11 am - 3 pm is an important aspect of sun safety.

2) Lip care is equally important as the lips due to their low melanin content and thinness are easily prone to sunburns and sun damage by UV rays. Using a lip balm with an SPF can protect the lips from the harmful rays of the sun.

3) Moisturisers must not be skipped in summer, a lightweight non greasy moisturiser can be opted for, in consultation with your dermatologist.
