Hair thinning and balding are common concerns among men aged 25 to 50, often impacting self-esteem and confidence. Recent advancements in regenerative medicine have introduced exosome therapy as a promising treatment for hair restoration. This article delves into what exosomes are, their efficacy in treating hair loss, application methods, associated costs, ideal candidates, and the current adoption among men.
Understanding Exosomes
Exosomes are nano-sized extracellular vesicles which function as cellular messengers, facilitating intercellular communication by transporting proteins, lipids, and genetic material. In the context of hair growth, exosomes can influence hair follicle cells, promoting regeneration and potentially reversing hair thinning and balding.
For individuals experiencing hair thinning or baldness, exosome therapy offers a novel approach to hair restoration. It can stimulate the proliferation of hair follicle cells, accelerate the transition from the resting (telogen) phase to the growth (anagen) phase, and protect hair follicle cells against oxidative stress and androgen-induced damage. These effects collectively contribute to enhanced hair density and thickness.
Methods of Application
• Injectable Treatment: Exosomes are injected directly into the scalp’s targeted areas, delivering growth factors to dormant hair follicles. This method ensures precise delivery and has been shown to promote hair regrowth effectively. “An undoubtedly effective treatment modality is injectable therapy, where exosomes are injected directly into the scalp,” says Dr Mehnaz Jahan, Clinical Cosmetologist, Owner of Keraderm Clinic.
• Microneedling with Exosomes: Combining microneedling with topical application of exosomes enhances absorption and stimulates collagen production, further supporting hair follicle health. “Microneedling with exosomes is another option, as it strengthens the absorption of the nutrients and increases circulation in the scalp,” Dr Jahan adds.
Who is it for?
Early-Stage Hair Thinning: Those noticing initial signs of hair thinning may experience significant improvement, as early intervention can prevent further damage. “Exosome therapy is a cutting-edge remedy for those with thinning hair or balding in its early stages. It helps revitalise weak follicles and also improves scalp health and stimulates new hair growth. Although chiefly effective in cases of early to medium hair loss, its chances of success are significantly lower in advanced baldness,” says Dr Jahan.
Adoption Among Men
The adoption of exosome therapy among men is on the rise, particularly within the 25 to 50 age group seeking effective, minimally invasive solutions for hair restoration. The appeal lies in the therapy’s potential to provide natural-looking results with minimal downtime compared to traditional hair transplant surgeries. " Exosome therapy is becoming increasingly popular, especially among men who are reluctant to take hormonal medications such as finasteride or minoxidil. Many professionals, athletes, and celebrities prefer exosome therapy for its non-invasive nature and natural results,” Dr Jahan adds. However, it’s not a cheaper solution too. According to Dr Jahan, the cost ranges from ₹50,000 to ₹1,50,000 per session in India and most people need one to three sessions for optimal results.
