This has truly been Zendaya’s year. The Emmy Award-winning actress was announced as the recipient of the prestigious 2020 Visionary Award at the Green Carpet Fashion Awards which celebrates equality, inclusivity and sustainability in the fashion industry.
“It’s an incredible honour and means the world to me. Throughout my career I have had the privilege of being able to showcase other different types of beauties. Through the work that I get to do, creating more positions of power, more creative positions and I hope to continue to be able to do that, until this industry really does reflect the beauty that I see every day,” Zendaya said, on receiving the award.
“We admire and celebrate her aim to create a more accurate reflection of the world in which she lives in. From including the first plus-sized model in your 2019 Tommy Hilfiger show, to more recently using an all- Black team to create your September InStyle cover. By working with and championing trailblazing within the Black community, she is a leading example for younger generations and beyond, and this is why we are honouring Zendaya with The GCFA Visionary Award,” said Livia Firth, author at Eco Age on Zendaya’s win, reports Harper’s Bazaar.
For the GCFA, Zendaya wore a slinky, shimmery brown Gianni Versace dress from 1996, the year she was born.
“The whole look is inspired by ’90s supermodels. She was actually born in 1996, so I thought that it’d be fun [for her] to wear something from that year. It’s taking her back—if Zendaya had been of age then, maybe she would have been a Versace model,” said stylist Law Roach to British Vogue.
