Most motorcyclists aren’t inherently fashion-forward. Sure, they might care about their denim jeans and leather jackets, but only if these items serve a protective purpose. So, when fashion brands collaborate with bikemakers, the question that always remains is: what new elements are you bringing to this niche conversation? How are you pushing the envelope in blending aesthetics with functionality? Thanks to a recent collaboration between Nappa Dori and Royal Enfield, Gautam Sinha, Founder and Creative Director of Nappa Dori, shed some light on this for us.
How did you blend Nappa Dori’s craftsmanship with Royal Enfield’s heritage in motorcycling?
Gautam Sinha: Royal Enfield’s heritage made it a great fit for collaboration, as it aligns well with our design philosophy. For this collection, we focused on lifestyle and city riders rather than just terrain riders. This allowed us to blend Nappa Dori’s craftsmanship with Royal Enfield’s legacy, emphasizing functionality and style for a broader audience.
Can you explain the creative process and the construction behind designing key pieces like the Navigator Laptop Sleeve and the Expedition Duffel Bag?
GS: The goal for this collection was to create pieces that are both durable and aesthetically pleasing. For key items like the Navigator Laptop Sleeve and the Expedition Duffel Bag, we used heavy-duty, water-resistant canvas for the exterior and paired it with our signature harness leather, which develops a unique patina over time. We prioritized practical design features, such as padded laptop compartments and multiple secure pockets, to meet the needs of our customers.
How did you ensure that each item in the collection is both aesthetic and practical for everyday use?
GS: Ensuring that each item is both aesthetic and practical is a key part of our approach. We focus on classic, timeless silhouettes and combine them with durable, functional materials. For riders and outdoor enthusiasts, it’s essential to strike a balance—designing pieces that protect against the elements while also reflecting personal style.
How did you decide on the specific products to include, like the fanny pack, helmet, and duffel bag?
GS: Choosing the specific products, such as the fanny pack, helmet, and duffel bag, involved numerous iterations before finalizing the seven items in the collection. Each product was selected for its distinct purpose while ensuring they all complemented each other. We included essential toolkits alongside lifestyle organizers, blending functionality with everyday style.
How might this collaboration influence future collections at Nappa Dori? Do you see it shaping your brand’s direction?
GS: We are selective about our collaborations, and partnering with Royal Enfield was a natural choice for us. As a fan of the brand and an avid rider myself, this project was personally meaningful. Looking ahead, we aim to continue setting design standards rather than just making some noise, so this collaboration will likely influence our approach and direction in a meaningful way.
