Influenced by grunge, rock, and hip-hop music, here are some of the ’90s-inspired trends that designers and brands are bringing back
When it comes to fashion trends, we often tend to look at the past for inspiration and ideas. This year, the decade that has captured the attention of designers is the world of the ’90s. Known for its relaxed and easygoing sense of style, the era is known to have produced plenty of trends that have already made a comeback. From baggy fits to extreme prints, we take a look at what’s back in style, and how to pull them off.
OVERSIZED FITS

What to wear: You should consider proportions while making a purchase. The trick is to make the oversized item the centre of your look, so pairing it with tapered trousers will maintain the proportions. You need to ease in. Looser clothing feels more casual, so make sure your oversized piece is the most relaxed element of your outfit. Style it with a good pair of sneakers, and minimal accessories like a dainty ring, sunglasses, and fanny packs.
What to avoid: Don’t just buy too big. It’ll throw off your proportions and drown you out rather than flattering your shape. This is the key distinction between oversized clothing and clothing that’s just too big. Don’t overthink it. Buy truly oversized pieces, consider proportions, and keep it casual, it’s a great way to experiment.
PRINTS

What to wear: Mix prints of varying sizes. This makes the look coordinated. It can be styled with mixed patterns and floral prints of varying sizes. The key is to pick the right print.
What to avoid: Minimalism is the key when it comes to styling prints. Stick to more than two different prints. Prints can experiment with varied sizing, styled with solid-coloured cotton trousers and pants. It can be accessorised by hats, bracelets, and sneakers.
VARSITY JACKETS

How to wear: One of the biggest trends of the ’90s is Varsity — be it jackets, T-shirts, or sweatshirts. The Ivy League-inspired print and patterns are back and that’s a good thing. They look great with jeans and sneakers. Even better pair ith with hype sneakers like Air Jordans and your class ’90s look will be complete.
What to avoid: Do not tailor them up with chinos and loafers. Varsity is meant to be fun, youthful, and cool. Go for denim or joggers and sneakers or slides for styling them. Varsity print will always have one or more colours. Hence, make sure the rest of the shades from your look are simple or neutral.
PLAIDS

How to wear: Always wear plaids like a shacket with a graphic-printed tee for a fun look, or a simple plain tee for a classic look. Put on a pendant with a chain to bring in a chic factor.
What to avoid: Avoid wearing them like a shirt, as that will down its game. Opt for different colours, like a pastel mix. Also, choose a thicker shacket as opposed to a simple shirt. The red and black combo is the most classic one, but some other colours will bring in an air of freshness. To make it a traditional ’90s look, put on a pair of straight fit or baggy jeans.
SLEEVELESS VESTS

How to wear: A cool way to pull off the sleeveless look would be to wear it with a nice pair of denims.
What to avoid: You need to find a garment that helps you carry with ease and comfort. It could be a couple of layered necklaces to cover up the illusion of something inside. If you do not have necessarily toned arms, you can find something that slouches over the shoulder, so it gives an illusion and you can carry the look.
SLOUCHY JEANS
Recommended by: Celebrity stylist Akshay Tyagi
How to wear: I think with slouchy jeans, you need to modernise the fit, and have slightly wide fit jeans and wear it with Converse to make it look cool. When it came to jeans in the ’90s, the rule was the baggier, the better. These supersized pants were a must-have of the day and quintessential to any streetwear look — so you can try to incorporate the same in these times as well.
What to avoid: You shouldn’t look like you are trying too hard. Make sure you don’t blindly let it take your entire body. You should make sure that is proportionate to your height. Don’t go for too wide a shape, go for a slimmer slouchy shape as opposed to an overpowering size, or make sure it is high-waisted if you are shorter.
