The 2016 Kingfisher Ultra Indian Derby was glittering with glamour that only showbiz icons can bring

The Kingfisher Derby is always the main highlight of the national horse racing calendar. Equestrian sports have always enjoyed a dalliance with the aristocratic, especially when the king of good times, Vijay Mallya himself steps into the playing field, with his prized horse Sea Lord.

Sea Lord however, wasn’t the one to take away the big prize. That honour went to the equally modestly named Desert God – Winner of the 2016 Kingfisher Ultra Indian Derby. This was the first edition of the newly named Kingfisher Ultra Indian Derby and it was peppered with the who’s who of Mumbai, the host city.

In front of one of the biggest crowds ever to turn up at the Mahalaxmi Race Course, Desert God won the event by a small margin after thundering past his chief competitors- Myrtlewood and Gestapo who placed second and third. Desert God has been trained by S. Padhmanabhan with jockey David Allan at the reins. Desert God won them a prize close to Rs 2 crore, with UB Chairman, Vijay Mallya handing over the trophy.
