The rise in offbeat suits has been at an all-time high this year. Here’s a lowdown of suits that quickly rose to popularity and stayed cool despite popular belief.

THE MILITARY SUIT

A quick browse of the latest runway shows and you’d quickly realise the rise of the military uniform in menswear. At Virgil Abloh’s Louis Vuitton show, the suit jackets had harnesses attached to it. Ermenegildo Zegna showcased tapered pants and belted suits in their latest collection.

THE ‘90S LEATHER SUIT

We see the leather upgrade for the guy that wishes the death of formal suits and yet can’t get enough of its appeal. Styling is key when opting for these. Case in point — Takeoff, Offset, and Quavo a.k.a the Migos. The rappers show the right way to wear them is in bold colours paired with chunky sole shoes. We have seen versions of it earlier on singer Zayn Malik with his sleek leather jackets with skinny pants.

THE NUDIE SUIT

With a seemingly long history of its origin, this cowboy suit saw a major revival this year. Named after rodeo tailor Nudie Cohn, these peculiar suits with embroidered patterns and embellishments in bright colours have been earlier seen on Gram Parsons, Elvis and Porter Wagoner. Post Malone and Diplo are the latest adapters of it.

THE SHORTS-SUIT

Pharrell Williams single-handedly started the tailored blazer with dress shorts trend when he first wore it to the Academy Awards in 2014. Five years later, the shorts-suit is back. Today, Thom Browne has the ‘shrunken suit’, which is labelled as the athlete’s uniform. It’s also the only suit rapper ASAP Rocky wears. This unconventional suit is wild, brave and stylish — all at once.

THE EXAGGERATED, OVERSIZED EVERYTHING SUIT

Dressing up in oversized clothes was the norm of the 80’s. It’s also becoming the new norm now. Partly due to the rise of athleisure and streetwear in general, oversized suits have managed to replace the neatly tailored suits. Take a look at Kim Jones, Demna Gvasalia, Patrick Grant and Virgil Abloh’s collections that are popularising the trend.
