For over a decade, designer Payal Singhal has worked towards carving the way for contemporary Indian wear. Her collections have fused traditional techniques with functionality, also why every bride wishes to dress in her creations time and again. The designer is now taking her signature prints and modern silhouettes to launch her first-ever menswear label, PS Men. The collection offers a mix of sherwanis, bundi sets, silk kurta sets and men’s accessories like ties, pocket squares and safas. Ahead of the launch, we caught up with the designer to talk about her maiden menswear collection.
How have you approached conventional menswear in your first PS men collection?
To me, the PS Men collection is an extension of the main Payal Singhal brand ethos, where we take Indian clothing and make it contemporary. We had a similar approach to the first menswear collection with our signature print silk kurtas, bundis, and sherwanis.
What’s been your inspiration while designing this menswear collection?
The real inspiration behind the menswear collection was actually the #PSGirls who are our existing clients. They pushed us into launching this collection because they wanted the men to have a similar design aesthetic to their outfits.
What are your thoughts on the men’s Indian wear market in India?
The menswear market in India is growing and is a very exciting space to be in now. There are garments available at all price points in various categories for men. The only area it lacks in is innovative design and hopefully, more designers will come in.
According to you, why should men opt for a piece from the PS collection?
I think the #PSmen collection is fresh, fun, a bit whimsical, and contemporary. It’s also super comfortable and really well priced so overall a really great investment for men.
Any menswear designers whose work you appreciate?
Lots actually, but some of my favourites are Kunal Rawal, AntarAgni and Sabyasachi Mukherjee.
And lastly, what’s that one piece of advice you would give men dressing up for a summer wedding?
Try something fun and colourful in light fabrics and mix and match with your main wardrobe staples.
