Behind The Scenes At Kunal Rawal’s Showcase At FDCI’s Couture Week

The fashion designer, who completes 15 years in the industry this year, shares behind-the-scenes details with us

The FDCI India Couture Week is back in its physical form after two years of the pandemic. This time, 13 couturiers are showcasing their designs on the runway, with Kunal Rawal presenting his collection on the 8th day of the fashion event.

Sharing a sneak peek into the upcoming collection, which promises to be functional and smart, he says, “We believe in crafting occasion wear that can cater to the whole spectrum of celebrations, ranging from modern luxury to deep-rooted traditional. Truly versatile ensembles you can easily dress up or tone down, mix or match, or even wear to work. Who are we tell you what to wear and when? Our role is to build in the possibilities in our designs to give you endless choices and combinations.”

The designer adds that in the last 15 years, the label has applied everything that they’ve learned in creating a new aesthetic language for modern Indian luxury. “We want to set new rules and directions in motion for the next 15 years. The idea is to work with things we’ve never done before and add a little twist to our beloved traditional classics. Think of this collection as a wardrobe for many men. You will find our signature structured pieces throughout, complimented by new silhouettes – flattering every form and changing shape and style however you need,” Rawal explains.

Jackets with built-in stoles, pattern play and intriguing textures form the core DNA of this collection. Think sherwanis as statement pieces and gender-fluid designs.

Talking about his vision, which he says aims to dress Indian men in a diverse manner, Rawal explains that he doesn’t stick to one point of view. “This collection has been created to set the stage for meaningful interactions between the audience and our designs. The media landscape is changing every day, and we are beginning to see real diversity and true representation. For us, the fun is in creating pieces for a market as diverse as India with clothes for different shapes and sizes, and different moods and yet have our signature style come through,” he points out.
