ASICS GEL-Quantum Infinity: First Look
ASICS GEL-Quantum Infinity: First Look

Features include gel-based cushioning all across the sole, great grip and support, and flexibility despite the 400 gm weight

ASICS, as a running brand, enjoys a cult following. As I have always maintained, it is hard to convince runners who use this Japanese made shoe to try anything else. Well, their latest launch may further their cause by attracting many more into their fold.

At first look  GEL-Quantum Infinity might look like any other running shoe with gel-based cushioning, except that here the gel runs across the length of the shoe, making up both the midsole and the outer sole. It is super flexible and makes for an extremely cushy ride. The drop is not too extreme thereby allowing for a natural stance. The seamless uppers have a checkerboard pattern, black on black textured, making for a rich classy profile.

At the time of publishing this, I have had a few short fast-paced runs and a couple of long slow ones in them and they seemed to hold up well. The shoe has ample grip and support. The black and orange colourway is definitely eye-catching and as far as ‘running shoes which can be worn with jeans’ go, they don’t get any easier on the eyes than this one. A special touch are the golden embellishments: from the lace-end aglets to the tongue, and also the Katakana-scripted ‘Infinity’ logo on the back spine.

The one thing which I found a bit concerning with this model was the weight. Although gel-based shoes are generally heavier than foam-based ones, this pair is a chunky 400gms/shoe which makes them far from a light pair. But, on the upside, you get unparalleled cushioning. It’s not sluggish but not the one for your next marathon PB either. Great as a general running pair.

So, with Christmas around the corner, this might be a good place to splurge; acquire a new pretty running pair to help fuel the new year resolutions.
