Melania Trump’s ‘Don’t Care’ Jacket Leaves Netizens Outraged

Why was her fashion choice such a big deal? Because Melania Trump was visiting a ‘shelter’ for migrant children

“It’s a jacket,” Melania Trump’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham said in an email to The Washington Post. “There was no hidden message. After today’s important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn’t going to choose to focus on her wardrobe.”

The jacket he was referring to was a $39 Zara jacket with the words “I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?” emblazoned on the back. Why was her fashion choice such a big deal?

Because Melania Trump was visiting a ‘shelter’ for migrant children. Trump told officials at the facility that she was there to learn more about the facility and to help the children reunite with their families. However, all this apparent compassion was blasted to bits when netizens noticed what she had worn.

While many agree with Grisham’s mail stating that it was just a jacket with “no hidden message”, others argued that Melania’s fashion choice spoke volumes about the Trump administration’s dismissive and often unbelievable brutal handling of refugees and migrants. Melania Trump is a former model who has often been praised for her sartorial taste, if nothing else. Hence, for her to choose this jacket at a moment when public sentiment is especially tender, is shocking.

As he usually does, President Donald Trump weighed in on the controversy and tweeted:

“I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?” written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!”

Multiple news media in the United States have reported how Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials have been separating children from their parents and holding them in what many netizens derisively consider to be ‘detention centres’.

“After the intense backlash, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order on Wednesday reversing the administration’s stance on family separation and saying families should be detained together. But immigrants’ advocates say this does not solve the problem and have accused the administration of not caring about the immigrants it is detaining,” writes Abigail Abrams for Time.
