Just a week after Krishnakumar Kunnath aka KK’s sudden demise, T-Series has released the music video for “Dhoop Paani Bahne De” sung by the late singer. The track penned by Gulzar and composed by Shantanu Moitra features in the upcoming Pankaj Tripathi starrer Sherdil-The Pilibhit Saga.
The 53-year-old singer suffered a cardiac arrest on May 31st, soon after performing at a concert in Kolkata, and was cremated in Mumbai two days later. In the time since, millions of fans and several collaborators shared their condolences, as the sun set on a voice that spanned across dozens of films with over 700 tracks recorded across the last two decades.
Sherdil is directed by Srijit Mukherji and tells the true-life 2017 story of a village affected by India’s rapid, unchecked urbanisation. Pankaj Tripathi’s character attempts to use a government relief scheme for the families of tiger attack victims to help save his village from falling into destitution. The film also features Neeraj Kabi and Sayani Gupta, who can be seen in the above music video.
Meanwhile, Gulzar spoke to The Indian Express, sharing his feelings on working with KK for the last time.
“Srijit (Mukherji, the director) has done me a favor in Sherdil. Not only did I get to write for such a beautiful film, I got to meet KK after ages. KK had first sung a song of mine in Maachis, ‘Chhor aye hum woh galiyaan…’. When he came to sing the song for Sherdil, it filled my heart with joy. It’s a shame that this had to go down as one of his last songs. It’s like he came to say goodbye.”
The song in Sherdil is on [the] environment” continued Gulzar. “The way it’s been used in the film, it’s a call to save your jungles, rivers, animals, and birds. After lending his voice to such an important message, he should have stayed a little longer. Pity, it wasn’t in our hands. I will pray for and remember him. Wherever Sherdil goes, his memory will accompany us.”
The latest song by KK evoked a lot of emotions among fans:
