Kangana Ranaut’s journey from being the country’s great liberal hope to an internet troll has been a rollercoaster ride – a ride that we desperately want to get off.
The country, especially the so-called ‘liberal media’, rallied around Ranaut when she was subjected to horrible accusations by Bollywood insiders and was mocked in public by Bollywood biggies like Karan Johar and Saif Ali Khan.
Johar and Khan’s insincere apologies received severe backlash and Ranaut, a brilliantly gifted actress, was applauded not only for her films but also for her courage to stand up to the patriarchy that is so deeply ingrained in our society.
Ranaut is still an extremely gifted artiste and is still very outspoken, except now she appears to relish making controversial statements and dangerous remarks about mental health.
It began with the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput earlier this year. Ranaut was one of the first to champion the theory that Rajput’s death was not a suicide and that something was amiss. Ranaut soon became a Republic TV favourite and went on to comment unfavourably about Deepika Padukone’s trial with depression and made tasteless comments about Urmila Matondkar on national television.
Today, a Twitter handle asked people if they had ever contemplated suicide, committed self harm, broken down in public, and asked netizens to retweet “and let people know how common falling apart is”.
Internet personality Priyanka Paul quote-tweeted the tweet and wrote: “Somedays I’ve done all of them together and that’s what I call multi-tasking”. Paul has been open about her mental health issues and has advocated for mental health awareness in the past.
To everybody’s surprise, Kangana Ranaut, the recipient of three National Film Awards and the Padma Shri went on to troll Paul on her tweet.
“Apni halat dekho kuch lete kyun nahin? Self admittedly Suicidal ho, toxic ho, creepy looking bhi, aisi kaun si kami hai jo aap mein nahin? Mujhe gyan mat do mujhse gyan lo, change that hairstyle asap and learn to meditate,” Ranaut wrote, trolling the 21-year-old on Twitter.
Paul was obviously not thrilled with this response and simply said: “Go fuck yourself”.
And then, Kangana Ranaut said this:
“No no no I am hot and sexy I don’t do it myself.”
