If we’re talking action stars, Jean-Claude Van Damme’s name is always somewhere at the top of that list. The actor hasn’t been seen in movies for a long time, but Netflix is bringing him back on our screens, with a new, French action-comedy film called The Last Mercenary.
Van Damme will play the role of a retired secret service agent who has to help clear his son’s name after he is falsely accused of trafficking by the French government. Of course, it won’t be easy as they go against the government as well as the French mafia.
The Last Mercenary will be the action star’s first attempt at the action-comedy genre. But in an interview with Variety, the Muscles from Brussels explained how he very excited to be be part of the film.
“The Last Mercenary is an incredibly exciting project and allows me to take on a new genre,” said Van Damme. “I’ve always been a fan of Jean-Paul Belmondo and I hope to take up the torch of action comedy in my own way. David Charhon’s script brings all these elements together in a very successful way — a beautiful story with emotion, a lot of action and a lot of humor.”
“I’m also very happy to work alongside a new generation of talent such as Alban Ivanov, Assa Sylla and Samir Decazza,” Van Damme added.
David Charhon will be in the director’s chair and will also act as the co-writer along with Ismael Sy Savane. We still have no information on The Last Mercenary‘s release date, but we expect it to arrive by early 2022.
