The director of movies like Whiplash and La La Land, Damien Chazelle has announced his project – Babylon, which is being described as a homage to the Golden Age of Hollywood, focusing on the transition between the silent film era and talkies.
Starring in the lead role for the first time since 2014 will be Tobey Maguire, who will be playing the role of Charlie Chaplin. Joining Maguire will be a star-studded cast consisting of Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie.
Brad Pitt will play the role of John Gilbert, who’s known for his performances in The Merry Widow and The Big Parade. Meanwhile, Robbie will be taking on the role of Clara Bow, the iconic sex symbol of the roaring 20s.
Exclusive footage of the movie was shown on Thursday at CinemaCon, and people are already considering it an Oscar nominee. This isn’t particularly surprising considering Hollywood loves movies about itself. You just have to see the number of nominations ‘Once Upon a time in Hollywood’ received a couple of years ago.
In addition to Maguire, Pitt and Robbie, the films will also star Spike Jonze, Jean Smart, Olivia Wilde, Samara Weaving, Max Minghella and Flea, of the Red Hot Chili Peppers fame. Babylon is scheduled for a Christmas release this year.
