Guillermo del Toro Showcases Gruesome And Glorious Practical Effects In ‘Cabinet Of Curiosities’ Promo

Officially announced almost a year ago as a “macabre mashup of genre-defining horror,” Guillermo del Toro’s new horror anthology, Cabinet of Curiosities, is finally ready to debut this October

Netflix has released a brand-new promo for Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming anthology horror series, Cabinet of Curiosities.

Described by the veteran Mexican filmmaker as ‘beautiful and horrible, at exactly the same time, the new series stitches together stories told by a variety of skilled horror directors across eight episodes. Amongst them are Panos Cosmatos, who helmed 2018’s Mandy, Australian filmmaker Jennifer Kent, director of The Babadook; and Ana Lily Amirpour, who helmed the critically acclaimed vampire flick, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night.

Del Toro will combine talents with co-showrunner J. Miles Dale, although when it comes to the individual episodes, the pair will step back and let each director’s voice shine, exploring stories from outer space, supernatural worlds, or even within our own minds.

“We gave ownership of each episode to the directors,” said Del Toro in the promo. “Each of the episodes has a whole world. They present you with different delights — some are savory, some are sweet. You get a surprise, from each of the bites.”

Much of Del Toro’s own filmography consists of monster stories — both of his Oscar-winning films Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water focus on these in great detail and heavily use practical effects to realize the director’s vision. Cabinet of Curiosities is similar in this regard, with the promo focusing on key shots that required extensive practical effects work to pull off:

“We wanted to create beautiful, practical creatures with all the artistry that goes into creating a great monster. We achieved some of the most remarkable images in the series,” he enthused proudly. “With Cabinet of Curiosities, what I’m trying to say is, “Look. The world is beautiful and horrible… at exactly the same time.”

The promo also revealed the final list of episodes — which differs slightly from previous reveals:

– Dreams in the Witch House (Directed by Catherine Hardwicke)

– Graveyard Rats (Directed by Vincenzo Natali)

– Lot 36 (Directed by Guillermo Navarro)

– Pickman’s Model (Directed by Keith Thomas)

– The Autopsy (Directed by David Prior)

– The Murmuring (Directed by Jennifer Kent)

– The Outside (Directed by Ana Lily Amirpour)

– The Viewing (Directed by Panos Cosmatos)

Cabinet of Curiosities is set to release on the 25th of October, with daily double-feature releases leading up to Halloween.
