What happens when an Indian teacher falls in love with a British woman? Perhaps, the answer to this lies in the movie Prince, which was released today. Featuring Sivakarthikeyan and Maria Ryaboshapka in lead roles, the comedy film has so far amassed decent reviews from fans, although critics weren’t too pleased. Shot in Tamil and Telugu, fans believe this could be the ideal Diwali binge-watch on a lazy weekend afternoon.

Sivakarthikeyan is one of the most popular and talked about actors in the south Indian movie industry. His last film Don had a decent run at the box office, raking in revenues amounting to Rs. 100 crores.  

This concept of two actors from two nationalities interreacting with each other on screen has always been an idea that garners intrigue among fans. In an interview, the actor was quizzed about the challenges that came along with shooting with a foreign artiste, given his co-star is a Ukrainian. To which he answered, “Her mother tongue is Ukrainian. She converted all the dialogues with pronunciations to her language – similar to many heroines here. So, it was not that difficult. Her lip sync in the film is very good. She has put in a lot of effort for it. Since it is a full-fledged comedy, we wanted to focus on one language. The only advantage it has in the Telugu market is that the director’s mother tongue is Telugu. So, he wrote the dialogues in a way that it is easy to use the film for both the languages.” 

Another challenge sprouted in the form of a release clash with another much-anticipated release, Sardar. Addressing speculations about the alleged cut-throat competition with the spy-thriller, Sivakarthikeyan said, “I think since both are from different genres, it will be a good competition. It’s healthy and good for everyone. Prince is an out-and-out comedy-drama, while Sardar is a high-concept spy thriller done with a lot of deliberation. People would want to go to theatres during Diwali, so it will be a nice thing to have two releases.” 

Initially, in January this year, when the making of the movie was announced, the project was titled SK20. Later in June, the team decided to go ahead with a name change to what it currently is i.e. Prince.
