Christmas might still be some time away, but Halloween has come early this year! Netflix dropped its newest anthology series, Cabinet of Curiosities yesterday. Spread across eight episodes, the streaming platform will be releasing two episodes every day leading to Halloween, with the first pair being directed by Oscar-winner Guillermo del Toro.
Right, so what is it about? As we mentioned earlier, each episode is independent of one other with story themes ranging from macabre to magical. While Del Toro is only attached to direct the first two episodes, reports do suggest that he’s heavily involved in the development of the rest of the series.
That said, both critics and audiences seem to be loving the show, with a current rating of 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. For instance, Richard Roeper of The Chicago Times writes, “On balance, this is a suitably grisly and nightmarish feast for fans of the sinister and the supernatural.”
Meanwhile, Leila Latif of The Guardian wrote: “While it is assumed that in any anthology series there will be hits and misses, nothing in this cabinet is worth discarding.” Twitter so far seems to have a similar reaction, with one user writing, “was blown away by the first two of episodes of Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. Incredibly strong and gruesome horror anthology in the E.C. vein, bolstered by great monster design work by Guy Davis and liberal amounts of humor and gore. A gift to me especially (sic).”
