The first three months of the year witnessed the announcement of numerous South Indian film remakes in Bollywood. Filmmakers are repackaging and remaking films to capitalise on the immense popularity of the originals, and we can’t deny that the films make huge business at the box office.
Here is a look at 7 South Indian movies that made it to Bollywood.
Vikram Vedha
Hrithik Roshan will play Vedha in the upcoming Hindi remake of the Tamil film Vikram Vedha, a role that was played by Vijay Sethupathi in the original. The film is being remade in Hindi by filmmaker Neeraj Pandey under his company Friday Filmworks in association with Reliance Entertainment and YNot Studios. The Tamil movie, directed by Pushkar and Gayathri, had Sethupathi playing the role of a gangster. Saif Ali Khan will play the role of Vikram, originally played by R Madhavan.
Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo/Shehzada
The Allu Arjun and Pooja Hegde action drama wasn’t just the highest-grossing Telugu movie but also became one of the highest-grossing Indian movies of the year. The official Hindi remake, Shehzada, will feature Kriti Sanon and Kartik Aaryan in the lead roles. Directed by Rohit Dhawan, the movie is slated to release this November.
Jigarthanda/Bachchhan Paandey
Akshay Kumar’s film Bachchhan Paandey, playing in theatres now, is a Hindi remake of the Tamil film Jigarthanda. Kumar portrays the role of a violent thug that was played by Bobby Simha in the original movie.
Jersey
Starring Nani and Shraddha Srinath in the lead roles, Jersey was called one of the best films of 2019 by several reviewers. Directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, the Telugu movie has been remade in Hindi with the same title. Shahid Kapoor will play the lead, alongside Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapoor. Jersey is expected to release in April.
Anniyan
This 2005 psychological-action thriller, starring Vikram and Sadha, bagged eight Filmfare Awards, six State Film Awards and also won a National Award. As per reports, Ranveer Singh and director S Shankar are teaming up for the a Hindi remake of this movie.
The Great Indian Kitchen
The original Malayalam film showed the struggles and internal conflicts of a newlywed woman, played by Nimisha Sajayan. The comedy-drama received universal critical acclaim and bagged several prestigious awards. Sanya Malhotra, who will be playing the protagonist in the movie’s Hindi remake, announced the project on her social media handle. Even though there were a number of producers in the race to get the rights of this movie, it was Harman Baweja and Vicky Bahri who acquired the final rights.
Driving Licence
Directed by Lal Jr, this Malayalam comedy-drama features Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramoodu in pivotal roles. The Hindi remake of this movie, Selfiee, is currently in development. Starring Emraan Hashmi and Akshay Kumar as the leads, the movie is directed by Raj Mehta.
