It’s been 13 years since we last saw the last Avatar movie and five months since we got a brief teaser trailer for the sequel. But today, the wait is almost over. A full trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water was released online, giving us a glimpse of the turmoil Pandora seems to be under.
Unlike the last movie, the sequel appears to dive more into the water element of the planet, as established from the opening shots. With an official run time of over 3 hours, there are numerous visual spectacles to gauge, along with cutting visual effects at work.
As far as the plot details are concerned, here’s what the official synopsis of the movie reads like: “Jake Sully and Ney’tiri have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans.”
As was the case for the first movie, Avatar: The Way Of Water is directed by James Cameron. He also shares writing credits with industry heavy-hitters like Amanda Silver (Mulan), Rick Jaffa (Jurassic World), Josh Friedman (Foundation), and Shane Salerno (Armageddon). The second movie is only the first of the four movies, which are mapped out for release in 2028. And if the reception of the first movie was any suggestion, we may just have the highest-grossing movie of all time on the cards here!
Along with Sam Worthington who returns as Jake, the movie features an ensemble cast of Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Stephen Lang, Michelle Yeoh, Giovanni Ribisi, Edie Falco, CCH Pounder, and Oona Chaplin.
Avatar: The Way Of The Water is scheduled to release next month on December 16, with a sequel planned for 2024.
