In tough times like these and the scrutiny that actors have to go through online, we think a digital detox is often very necessary. In the past, stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Milap Zaveri, and Sonakshi Sinha have also taken a break from social media such reasons. Some took a break to stay away from toxic content, while others avoided social media to keep themselves away from controversies. Looking back at some major digital detoxes, here is a list of celebrities who said goodbye to social media.

Shah Rukh Khan

Shahrukh Khan decided to quit social media after he spoke about being a culprit of religious intolerance in the country, during an interview. People were agitated with SRK and flooded his Twitter with hate comments. Seeing their reaction, the superstar decided to keep himself away from social media for a few months. Before bidding adieu, he tweeted, “Sad, I read so many judgments, jingoism, religious intolerance on the net & I used to think, this platform will change narrow mindedness, but no!” Persuaded by ace director Abhinav Sinha, SRK later made a comeback on Twitter.

Rishi Kapoor

Late Rishi Kapoor was quite active on social media and was often slammed for his opinionated tweets. Overwhelmed by all the negativity online, the actor had decided to quit Twitter. He posted, “Hi. Thought about it. Too much negativity abusive language and disregard for seniors. Will retire from Twitter.”

Milap Zaveri

Back in August 2020, Milap Zaveri decided to quit Twitter, citing that it was a toxic place. He was trolled by users on social media for mistakenly tweeting about the death of Nishikant Kamat. The director issued a statement saying, “When I joined Twitter it was a great place to express one’s views, thoughts, musings. To connect with people. To appreciate others. To be updated with the latest news. But off late it’s become an extremely toxic place full of trolls and negativity. But I’m a very positive person! Hence, today I bid it adieu.”

Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi Sinha, along with three other actors, decided to quit social media after the whole Rajput’s demise row gained prevalence on social media. Sinha tweeted, “The first step to protecting your sanity is to stay away from negativity. And nowhere more of that than Twitter these days!” Saqib Saleem, Aayush Sharma, and Zaheer Iqbal also followed suit and bid adieu to Twitter on similar grounds.

Shashank Khaitan

The director decided to take a break from social media amidst the nepotism debate. “Done with twitter… just a breeding ground for hate and negativity… very sad that a platform so powerful, could not be used to create a better world… praying for peace and love always… deactivating my account now … @Twitterindia,” he wrote while saying goodbye to the digital world.

Coming back to Aamir Khan, he is currently busy with the shoot of Laal Singh Chaddha. The film was scheduled to release on Christmas last year but there was a change in plans after the lockdown was implemented in India. The film will reunite him with his 3 Idiots co-star Kareena Kapoor Khan.
