Meet the Zenith x Felipe Pantone Defy Skyline Tourbillon
Zenith and Felipe Pantone Join Forces Once More for the Defy Skyline Tourbillon

This marks the third collaboration between Zenith and the Argentine-Spanish visual artist

The Zenith x Felipe Pantone partnership, which began in 2020, brought together the artist's dynamic, futuristic style with Zenith's cutting-edge horology. Known for his bold use of light, color, and geometric patterns, Pantone first collaborated with Zenith by transforming the façade of their historical manufacture. This partnership quickly evolved into a series of limited-edition watches that pushed the boundaries of design and craftsmanship. From the instantly sold-out Defy 21 in 2021 to the record-setting Defy 21 Double Tourbillon at the OnlyWatch charity auction, each release has seamlessly blended Pantone's avant-garde artistry with Zenith's technical mastery, creating timepieces that are as much works of art as they are precision instruments.

The latest addition to this ongoing collaboration is the Defy Skyline Tourbillon, a limited edition of just 100 pieces. For the first time, Pantone has turned his artistic vision to the Defy Skyline model, bringing his signature use of light, color, and motion to a timepiece that is as visually striking as it is technically impressive.

At first glance, the Defy Skyline Tourbillon stands out with its 41mm octagonal stainless-steel case. The angular, geometric silhouette is accentuated by alternating satin-brushed and polished finishes, creating a dynamic play of light across its sharp facets and smooth contours. The dodecagonal bezel further enhances this effect, drawing the eye to the intricate details that define this watch.

But the real masterpiece lies within the dial. Made from a sapphire disk, the dial features a micro-engraved pattern of concentric circles, creating a moiré visual effect that echoes Pantone's work. The back of the sapphire dial is finished with a mirrored metallic coating, producing a stunning display of iridescent colors reminiscent of a vintage CD. The vignette effect, darkening towards the edges, adds depth to the dial, making it a true work of art. Pantone's signature style is evident in the distorted hands and hour markers, which appear as though they've glitched, a nod to the digital revolution that heavily influences his work. These elements, finished in a gradient of rainbow tones, complement the tourbillon at 6 o’clock, which is shaped like a lightning bolt—a recurring motif in Pantone’s oeuvre.

The Defy Skyline Tourbillon is not just about aesthetics; it is also a marvel of technical engineering. The tourbillon mechanism, visible through the dial opening at 6 o’clock, completes one full rotation every 60 seconds, ensuring the watch remains animated at all times. The tourbillon bridge, shaped like a lightning bolt and finished in a metallic rainbow gradient, is a testament to the intricate craftsmanship that has gone into this timepiece.

Inside, the watch is powered by the El Primero 3630 movement, a high-frequency automatic calibre that beats at 36,000 vibrations per hour (5Hz). With a power reserve of approximately 60 hours, this movement ensures the Defy Skyline Tourbillon is as reliable as it is beautiful. The movement's star-shaped oscillating weight, also finished in a rainbow PVD coating, ties together the chromatic elements seen throughout the watch.

Completing the package is a highly versatile strap system. The Defy Skyline Tourbillon comes with an interchangeable stainless steel bracelet and a black rubber strap, both designed for maximum comfort and style. The rubber strap, featuring a starry sky pattern, adds a touch of casual elegance, making the watch suitable for both formal and everyday wear.

This timepiece is not just a watch; it’s a statement, a collector's item, and a symbol of the seamless fusion of contemporary art and high watchmaking. Limited to only 100 pieces, the Defy Skyline Tourbillon Felipe Pantone will be available from September 12, 2024, making it a must-have for those who appreciate the rare and the exceptional.
