When Premier League Title Race Went Down The Wire
When Premier League Title Race Went Down The Wire

When teams came tantalisingly close yet so far

A brace from Erling Haaland helped Manchester City hunt down Tottenham Hotspurs at White Hart Lane, much to the dismay of Arsenal as anything less than three points for City would have brought them inches closer to the Premier League title. For Arsenal to win the league, they need to secure three points on final matchday, and hope West Ham deny Man City a victory. We look at five of the tightest Premier League title races over the years.

Sergio Aguero's Winner

One of the most thrilling title races in Premier League history, the 2011/12 saw Manchester City and Manchester United go head-to-head until the final day of the season. Manchester City needed a goal in the final few minutes of the game against Queens Park Rangers, and their talisman striker Sergio Aguero delivered to send the fans into a frenzy.

The Gerrard Slip

In a heart-stopping showdown, Manchester City outmanoeuvred Liverpool to clinch their second consecutive title by two points. Liverpool tasted the bitter agony of near-victory, falling just short of their first Premier League triumph in decades. A slip against Chelsea by Steven Gerrard and a draw with Crystal Palace dashed their dreams, paving the way for Manchester City to claim glory.

Pep Guardiola's Triumph In 2018

Manchester City and Liverpool, led by Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp respectively, engaged in a fierce battle for the title. Manchester City ultimately triumphed with a remarkable 98 points, just one point ahead of Liverpool. The Reds were left to ponder how they narrowly missed out on the championship, particularly reflecting on a crucial 2-1 defeat to City at the Etihad Stadium where John Stones' goal-line clearance came within 11 millimetres of changing the outcome. Guardiola's squad clinched the title with a decisive 4-1 victory over Brighton on the final day, prolonging Liverpool's quest for a Premier League title.

Manchester United's 1998/99 Season

Another memorable title race, this season saw Manchester United and Arsenal battle it out until the final game of the season. United secured the title in dramatic fashion, overcoming a 1-0 deficit against Tottenham Hotspur to claim a 2-1 victory and pip Arsenal to the title by just one point. This victory completed a historic treble for United as they also won the FA Cup and Champions League that season.
