Spotify Premium Users Will Now Get Separate ‘Play’ And ‘Shuffle’ Buttons
Spotify To Finally Separate The ‘Play’ And ‘Shuffle’ Button, But At A Cost

Twitter has not taken the news well, to no-one’s surprise

Spotify really wants you to pay for its premium subscription, it seems. The music streaming app recently announced that it’ll be separating its play and shuffle buttons, but only for its paid subscribers. In the coming weeks, an update will be rolled out, replacing the combined play/shuffle button.

While announcing the update, Spotify wrote on its blog, “This new change will allow you to choose the mode you prefer at the top of playlists and albums and listen to it the way you want to. Whether you love the joy of the unexpected with Shuffle mode or prefer listening to tunes in order by simply pressing Play, Spotify has you covered.”

For those who are unaware, or simply use Apple Music, Spotify’s combined shuffle/play button has caused downright major frustration from artists, who want their albums to be heard in a specific order. Even Adele took to Twitter last year saying, “We don’t create albums with so much care and thought into our track listing for no reason.”

To their credit, Spotify did change the default button on album pages to just play, instead of play/shuffle. Now, the same functionality will be available to premium customers throughout the app and through different playlists. “From the moment you hit play on Spotify, you decide the way you want to hear your favourite playlists or that new album you’re obsessed with,” the music streaming app further added.

Users have long been complaining about the app’s overall layout and the inconsistency of the algorithm to shuffle songs as per one’s liking. However, with the new update being paywalled under a subscription tier, many have taken to Twitter to express their disappointment.
