From 'Small-Town Reality' To Pulwama - Is Bollywood's Latest Obsession War?
From ‘Small-Town Reality’ To Pulwama – Is Bollywood’s Latest Obsession War?

If 2017 and 2018 were all about the adventures of a small-town hero, 2019 is all about war

“You’ve got to think of long, complicated titles. The straight ones like Pulwama, Surgical Strike 2.0, Balakot are all gone.”

So says a middle-aged Bollywood producer as his assistant rushes to come up with new titles to register, reports Huffington Post.

Following the air strikes launched by India on Pakistan on the 26th of February, the Indian Motion Pictures’ Producers’ Association (IMMPA) in Andheri in Western Mumbai was absolutely cramped. According to the report by Ankur Pathak, the representatives of at least five production houses had rushed to reserve movie titles based on the Pulwama attacks and the ‘surgical strike’ that followed.

As is evident, films of a patriotic nature are a huge hit at the Box Office. Uri: The Surgical Strike has done extremely well and so has Manikarnika. According to trade magazine Complete Cinema, titles like Pulwama Pulwama: The Surgical Strike, War Room, Hindustan Hamara Hai, Pulwama Terror Attack and The Attacks of Pulwama were registered the day 49 CRPF jawans were killed.

Now, one hears that Vicky Kaushal is set to make another patriotic film – he will be starring in Shoojit Sircar’s film Udham Singh which is set in the pre-Independence era. Akshay Kumar will be starring in Kesari and John Abraham will play in the lead in the Raazi-esque film, Romeo Akbar Walter. It appears that war is the latest trend to take Bollywood’s fancy and by all accounts, it’s here to stay.

If 2017 and 2018 were all about the adventures of a small-town hero (Stree and Andhadhun for starters) who was as real as real could be, 2019 is all about war.
