Seeing your favourite book come alive on the big screen is a dream come true for readers. It’s no wonder that movies inspired by books have done well among audiences. Even as the argument of whether the book is better than the movie is a never-ending one, there’s no denying that there is a specific audiences for these films. We look at some Hindi movies that were based on books and went on to do well, as well as some upcoming films that follow this trend:





Inspired by Shakespeare’s Othello, Omkara is a film that went down in the history of Indian cinema and is considered to be a wonderful adaptation of the book. The film traced the story of a politically-minded enforcer’s misguided trust in his lieutenant that led him to suspect his wife of infidelity.



3 Idiots



Based on Chetan Bhagat’s debut novel Five Point Someone, 3 Idiots was a money-spinner at the box-office. A perfect guide of what NOT to do at IIT, the film traced the story of three students. The entertainer had a gripping plot that kept the audience entertained. Starring Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Kareena Kapoor and Sharman Joshi in lead roles, the film was declared a super-hit.



Devotion of Suspect X



Based on Keigo Higashino’s novel Devotion Of Suspect X, the film will be directed by Sujoy Ghosh and produced by Jay Shewakramani. The Netflix film stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Vijay Varma. While there isn’t much known about the film, the cast and crew have been dropping teasers and images from post-shoot gatherings to keep fans interested.






Vishal Bharadwaj’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s play Hamlet was lauded for its crisp screenplay and stellar performances. The film revolved around a young man who returns home to Kashmir on receiving news of his father’s disappearance only to uncover some nasty family secrets. He learns that security forces have detained his father for harbouring militants and his mother is in a relationship with his uncle.






Based on Bhaavna Arora’s book Undaunted, the movie will follow the inspiring journey of Lt. Ummer Fayaz, a man who set an example for fellow Kashmiris to break the cycle of violence during his short tenure in the Army. Jay Shewakramani has bagged the rights to the book.
