Indian Team Rewarded with Massive Prize Money for World Cup Triumph"
A long, agonising wait of 11 years came to an end in Barbados when India thumped South Africa by seven runs to clinch their second T20 World Cup title, and the first ICC trophy since winning the Champions Trophy in 2013. Rohit Sharma became only the second skipper, after MS Dhoni, to lead India to the T20 World Cup. It was a thrilling encounter, where South Africa had a chance to down India after a ruthless assault from Heinrich Klaassen put them in a great position, needing just 30 off as many balls, but they squandered the chance.
Notably, the International Cricket Council has confirmed that India's triumph in the tournament earned them a prize purse of $2.45 million (approx. Rs. 20.42 crore), with South Africa as runners-up receiving $1.28 million (approx. Rs. 10.67 crore). This year's total prize fund of USD 11.25 million marks a significant increase from the previous year's USD 5.6 million, benefiting all 20 teams that participated. Runner-up South Africa saw a prize upgrade from USD 800,000 to USD 1.28 million while losing semi-finalists Afghanistan and England each received USD 787,500, a substantial increase from the previous year's USD 400,000.
But it's not just the $2.45 million that India will be taking home. The BCCI has announced a whopping Rs 125 crore to the entire team for bringing delights to the nation. “I am pleased to announce prize money of INR 125 Crores for Team India for winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024," announced BCCI secretary Jay Shah on social media. "The team has showcased exceptional talent, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Congratulations to all the players, coaches, and support staff for this outstanding achievement.”
Shah also praised the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma for his terrific captaincy. He became the first captain to lead the team to a T20 World Cup triumph without losing a single match. Sharma also played a crucial role with the bat, scoring a vital half-century in the semi-final against England.
“Under the exceptional leadership of Rohit Sharma, this team has shown remarkable resolve and resilience, becoming the first team in the history of the ICC T20 World Cup to win the tournament unbeaten," said Shah. "They have faced and silenced their critics with stellar performances time and again. Their journey has been nothing short of inspirational, and today, they join the ranks of the greats,” he added.
