Diljit Dosanjh's Watch Collection Goes Practical, Yet Classy
Diljit Dosanjh's Watch Collection Goes Practical, Yet Classy

While the iconic Punjabi singer prefers kadas and bracelets over timepieces, he still sports a few choice watches every now and then

Breaking the internet seems to be a semiannual phenomenon for Diljit Dosanjh, as the star raided Ed Sheeran's incredible +-=÷x tour performance last weekend in Mumbai. Like many watch writers, I found myself peeking at the actor-singer's Instagram for a glimpse at his timepiece choice for one of his biggest live performances so far, and found myself rather amused. Sheeran's wrist was adorned with a classic from his collection — a rare white-ceramic Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar — while Dosanjh, par for the course, wore a pair of bracelets. Again.

Don't get me wrong though. Far from bring disappointed, I think Dosanjh's watch collection speaks to a certain genuineness. He's largely chosen to highlight his culture on his wrist and reserve the big spends for his multiple revenue streams, streetwear fits, and travel — like his recent spiritual trip to Himachal Pradesh. This means that each watch appearance for Dosanjh bears a bit more meaning; so let's dive into his capsule-wardrobe-esque collection, and take a closer look:

Yes, this is a bit tongue-in-cheek; but it would be remiss for me to say that this isn't Dosanjh's most-spotted wrist candy. He's made a smart choice by going for all-black — a colour that effortlessly matches the many palettes he's known to dress up in — and is usually spotted in these while busy on set. I guess you have plenty of notifications to sift through if you're just shy of 20M followers on Instagram, so why not?

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Dosanjh seems to have opted for an all-time classic as his 'statement' watch — decked out in 18k yellow gold and sporting an eye-catching 40mm dial, this is simply one of the most recognisable watches in the world. Though Dosanjh has rarely been spotted in this, he's certainly not alone when it comes to fellow-celebs with Day-Dates — Bruno Mars, Victoria Beckham, Drake, Aziz Ansari, and Justin Bieber all have sported this 20th century titan.

On the sportier side of things, Dosanjh seems to have opted Hublot over the likes of TAG Heuer and Seiko, with this iconic piece in a sober, solid piece that puts craftsmanship and robustness front and centre. Initially surfacing on the secondhand trading market in 2018, the watch has since become a coveted daily driver for the rich and famous — Jay Z and Beyonce, for instance, have both worn and collaborated with Hublot to release special edition Big Bangs.

So far, Dosanjh seems to prefer lighter timepieces (if any at all), so its no surprise that he's chosen a relatively common, popular quartz-driven workhorse to start his diving watch collection. This watch combines performance with style, featuring water resistance up to 300 meters, a unidirectional bezel, and luminous hands and markers for visibility in low light, along with an impressive array of colours and finishes when it comes to dials, bezels, cases and straps. Dosanjh seems to have gone for a bright orange — a fun and contrast-rich option that's going to make any outfit pop.

For some reason, every time I pass a watch boutique I happen to pause on this rather inconspicuous chronograph. Maybe it's the dial layout, or perhaps the association with motorcycle racing... I guess Dosanjh was also drawn to this modern classic's sporty-yet-simple design. Offering a robust build and a large range of variants, Tissot's entry-level chronograph takes the back seat in the race against his Big Bang, but still offers a quick peek into his tastes when it comes to watch collecting.
