| A
decade — of being in the business, of being
around, of making an impact — has a nice rounded-off
feel to it. You look back at what you’ve achieved
over the last ten years and plan ahead for the next
ten. Launched around the time of the dotcom boom,
we’ve steered our baby through some turbulent
weather, surfed the boom-time wave and are now getting
acquainted with somebody we’d rather not meet
— the grouchy, party-pooping Mr Recession.
But all along MW has stuck to capturing the zeitgeist
in our own unique way. ? Apart from the content
— sparkling, incisive and often, prescient,
our readers’ words, not ours — we’ve
set the benchmark in photography and production
values as well. Over the years many different impactful
men and women have graced our covers — from
businessmen and sportspersons, to actors and singers
— people whose lives and careers have run
parallel to the magazine’s. Each of these
shoots has passed the ultimate test for any magazine
— they are still remembered. ? As we enter
our tenth year, we at MW celebrate the people who
appeared before the camera and the men and women,
some of them MW staffers, others associates —
who stood behind. The series begins with John Abraham.
? John first appeared on our pages as a gawky, young
Gladrags Manhunt contest winner and was shot by
Delhi-based Tarun Khiwal. Bollywood, of course,
was a natural progression. We still remember him
in his first movie Jism with the steaming
Bipasha Basu. The ones in between we tend to forget
until Dhoom. He did his bit in both Deepa
Mehta’s Water and Anurag Kashyap’s
No Smoking, and then there was 2008’s
blockbuster hit Dostana. Today John wears
many hats — brand ambassador to multinational
brands, avid biker, PETA activist and film producer
(he is co-producing 1-800-Love) — and he will
be next seen in Kabir Khan’s New York. The
following pages attempt to show this very transformation.
